چکیده

The social Natal mole-rat Cryptomys hottentotus natalensis has a mean (± S.D.) resting metabolic rate (RMR) when newly captured of 1.03 ± 0.25 cm^ O2 g~^ (n = 7) at an ambient temperature (Ta) of 30 °C, within the thermoneutral zone (TNZ) of 30-31.5 °C. Two months after maintenance in the laboratory at 26 °C, the RMR of the same animals showed a concomitant drop in value of 20 % at 30 °C (TNZ) to a mean of 0.80 ± 0.12 cm^ O2 g~^ h~^ (n = 14), indicating that laboratory accHmation had occurred. The body temperature of the mole-rat is low 33.4 ± 0.83 (n = 36) and remains stable at Ta's from 10-30 °C. Above 31.5 °C, Tb increases albeit sHghtly to 35.7 ± 0.51 °C (n = 24). The conductance is high 0.13 ± 0.03 cm"' O2 g~^ h~' °C~^ (n = 24) at the lower limit of thermoneutrahty. The mean RMR at 18 °C (the lowest Ta tested) was 1.83 ± 0.46 cm^ O2 g"' h"^ which is 2.2 times that of the RMR in the TNZ. The nest (where mole-rats rest for up to 80 % of the day) is the focal point of the burrow System. The selection for C. h. natalensis to acclimate within its TNZ may relate to seasonal fluctuations in the temperature occurring in the shallow nest, resulting in seasonal acclimatisation in RMR.

The energetics of huddling in two species of mole-rat (Rodentia: Bathyergidae).

Small rodents with a large surface-area-to-volume ratio and a high thermal conductance are likely to experience conditions where they have to expend large amounts of energy in order to maintain a constant body temperature at low ambient temperatures. The survival of small rodents is thus dependent on their ability to reduce heat loss and increase heat production at low ambient temperatures. Two...

Ectoparasite burdens of the common mole-rat (Cryptomys hottentotus hottentotus) from the Cape Provinces of South Africa.

The members of the African mole-rat family Bathyergidae are widely distributed across sub-Saharan Africa. Despite their well-studied biology and reproductive physiology, the current knowledge of their ectoparasite fauna is limited and ambiguous due to recent revisions of the bathyergid taxonomy. The common mole-rat (Cryptomys hottentotus hottentotus) is 1 of the most widely distributed species ...

Specific Paucity of Unmyelinated C-Fibers in Cutaneous Peripheral Nerves of the African Naked-Mole Rat: Comparative Analysis Using Six Species of Bathyergidae

In mammalian peripheral nerves, unmyelinated C-fibers usually outnumber myelinated A-fibers. By using transmission electron microscopy, we recently showed that the saphenous nerve of the naked mole-rat (Heterocephalus glaber) has a C-fiber deficit manifested as a substantially lower C:A-fiber ratio compared with other mammals. Here we determined the uniqueness of this C-fiber deficit by perform...

The reproductive biology of the solitary Cape mole- rat, Georychus capensis and the social Natal mole-rat, Cryptomys hottentotus natalensis (Rodentia: Bathyergidae)

The seasonality of wild caught Cape mole-rats was investigated, focusing on endocrine, neuroendocrine and neuroanatomical parameters. The Cape mole-rat reproduces only during the winter rainfall period of the western Cape Province. Interestingly, the gonadal steroid hormones do not show any significant seasonal patterns in either males or females. In addition, the pituitary does not exhibit a r...
